BK/1
BIKING A COROICO (NOR YUNGAS) FULL DAY

  • Dynamic Time in Bike: 4 ½ hrs
  • Altitude Difference: 3,500m/ 11,483 ft
  • Journey: 1 day, difficulty 1
  • Distance: Cumbre- Yolosa, 59 kms

Description

Incredible scenic variety with at least four ecological floors, and a spectacular descent of more than 3,500m/11,483 ft from snow-covered plains and mountain ranges down to a semi-tropical Jungle. Part of the ride is on the dramatic and scenic "World's Most Dangerous Road," dubbed as such by the Inter-American Development Bank in 1995.

DAY 1

The beginning, in La Cumbre (4,700 m/15,400ft), the highest and coldest point, here you have a great view of a number of snow-covered peaks. From there we descend rapidly down a twisting road amongst mountain peaks. We stop for refreshments and a rest along the way, all the better to give us time to take in the scenery: towering cliff faces, dramatic drops, ever greener vegetation and changeable weather.

The second part of the road is the infamous narrow gravel road, it has sheer drops off to our left and hulking rock overhangs and cascading waterfalls to our right. As we near the end of the ride it gets progressively hotter and dustier. By the time you arrive at the bottom in Yolosa (1,200m / 3,937 ft) you will be tired, hot, dirty and exhilarated. From Yolosa we catch a ride 7km (4 miles) up to Coroico (1,700m / 5,577ft) and have lunch in a nice hotel with a swimming pool.

DAY 1

The trip leaves from La Cumbre (4.700 m / 15,420 ft), it continues by a paved road, until Unduavi, from here we Begin the gravel road, toward South Yungas, we go by the Velo de la Novia (Cascade), The Castle (Hotel), Florida (small village), Santa Rosa, until Puente Villa (1.700 m aprox), 4 ½ hrs biking, from here we continue in transport until Estancia Yarija (30 min), have lunch, to continue with a trekking (1 hr) until finding the coffee, coca plantations.

  • ALTITUDE DIFFERENCE: 4,245m / 13,927 ft
  • JOURNEY: 1 DAY, DIFFICULTY 1 and 3

You ride from the World's Highest Developed Ski-Slope (5,345m / 17,500 ft) down to the semi-tropical, (1,100m / 3,600 ft) Zongo Valley. This ride is for experts due to the first part, downhill from some of the peaks of Chacaltaya.

DAY 1

Drive up to the ski- lodge, here we unload the bikes and have time to take in the view of the Royal range, Condoriri, Huayna Potosí, Illimani, Mururata, etc.

We push up the bikes up from the ski-lodge approximately 1 km up a rock and ice ridge to the peak of Chacaltaya, there we traverse along ridge tops and over several other minor peaks to select one option. We descend down either mining roads or walking trails until we reach the Milluni to Zongo road. Then we are driven upwards to join up to Zongo pass and Dam, take a rest before setting off again. From this point (4,700 m./ 15,420 ft.) we descend rapidly down the gravel road towards zongo valley. As we descend, the temperature rises and the scenery becomes steadily greener and lusher. We can bike as long as desired down this road.

OPTIONAL
