BIKING A COROICO (NOR YUNGAS) FULL DAY
- Dynamic Time in Bike: 4 ½ hrs
- Altitude Difference: 3,500m/ 11,483 ft
- Journey: 1 day, difficulty 1
- Distance: Cumbre- Yolosa, 59 kms
Description
Incredible scenic variety with at least four ecological floors, and a spectacular descent of more than 3,500m/11,483 ft from snow-covered plains and mountain ranges down to a semi-tropical Jungle. Part of the ride is on the dramatic and scenic "World's Most Dangerous Road," dubbed as such by the Inter-American Development Bank in 1995.
DAY 1
The beginning, in La Cumbre (4,700 m/15,400ft), the highest and coldest point, here you have a great view of a number of snow-covered peaks. From there we descend rapidly down a twisting road amongst mountain peaks. We stop for refreshments and a rest along the way, all the better to give us time to take in the scenery: towering cliff faces, dramatic drops, ever greener vegetation and changeable weather.
The second part of the road is the infamous narrow gravel road, it has sheer drops off to our left and hulking rock overhangs and cascading waterfalls to our right. As we near the end of the ride it gets progressively hotter and dustier. By the time you arrive at the bottom in Yolosa (1,200m / 3,937 ft) you will be tired, hot, dirty and exhilarated. From Yolosa we catch a ride 7km (4 miles) up to Coroico (1,700m / 5,577ft) and have lunch in a nice hotel with a swimming pool.
