Puno City – Lake Titicaca

Lake TiticacaPuno is situated on the coast of wonderful Lake Titicaca in the south east corner of Peru and its only 126 km from the border of Bolivia.

Puno is quite a cold town surrounded by a deserted high plateau located at a altitude of 3809 m. It is not an important destination itself but a stop on the way to the Island of Lake Titicaca.
However Puno is a mix of two different cultures which includes the Aymara from the south region and the Quechua from the north region. This is the reason Puno is called as a ‘Folkloric Capital of peru’ as its offer massive and variety of traditional fiestad, music and dances.

In 1968 Puno was founded after the discovery of nearby silver mines and its full name is San Carlos de Puno. Between the larger silver mines at Potosi in Bolivia and Lima, Puno is a small stopping place. Basically Puno is an agricultural region and engage in cultivating barley, potatoes and quinoa. It also raising cattle, lamas and sheep

In this part of the Peru travelers are mostly visit the Lake Titicaca as this is the main attraction here. Lake Titicana is an wonderful lake 190km in length with an width of 50 km. this is the biggest lake in south America and the biggest in the world at a height above 2000m

According to Andean legend the Lake Titicaca was the birthplace of civilization. The creator god Wiracocha directing the sun, moon and stars to rise out of the lake and positioned them in the sky to brought light into the dark world. There are a lot of islands can be accessed from Puno which make the visit very interesting. Floating island of Uros, Taquile and Amantani is the most popular of them and can be explored by taking an pre arranged tour with one of the local tour operators
